Step for How to Caulk

  • Remove all old caulk with a razor knife.
  • Clean the area you plan to caulk with mild soap and water.
  • Wipe the area dry.
  • Fill a bucket with clean water and a sponge.
  • Measure the size of the gap you plan to caulk.
  • Cut the tip of the caulk tube at a 45 degree angle. The size of the hole you cut should be slightly smaller than the gap you plan to caulk.
  • Squeeze the caulk gun or tube applying even pressure as you move the tip of the caulk tube along the gap.
  • Stop after caulking two feet.
  • Dip your finger in the clean water.
  • Run your finger along the caulk line smoothing it out.
  • Wring the sponge out.
  • Wipe the sponge across the caulk line removing all excess caulk.
  • Repeat that process until you have caulked the entire gap.
  • Allow the caulk to dry for the time suggested on the label.
