Ceramic Tile Checklist

How to Create a Ceramic Tile Design

  • Choose Your Color and Style. Decide what colors and styles of ceramic tile you would like to use in your space. Bring paint, fabric and wood samples to help you make your decision.
  • Start with Field Tile. Field tiles are plain, basic ceramic tiles that have a flat front and no design and are used as the main tile in a design.
  • Frame Your Space. Use decorative frame molding to add interest and define where your ceramic tile design begins and ends.
    • Base molding tiles run along the floor at the bottom of the walls.
    • Rail molding tiles are used to top off a half wall of tile.
    • Cornice or crown molding tiles are used where the top of the wall meets the ceiling.
  • Add Decorative Tiles. Use a decorative border molding to add pattern, texture and color to your tile design. Deco tiles can be used sparingly in field tile to make your tile design more interesting.
