What to Do Before Shopping:

  • Tape a ruler to your door next to your door hardware.
  • If you know how to remove your door hardware, take it off of your door. If not, skip this step.
  • Take a picture of your door making sure you can read the numbers on the ruler and see all of the door hardware.
  • Look at the color of the finishes in your room. Collect samples of the colors to take with you when you go shopping.
  • Take pictures of the room and exterior of your home and take them with you when you go shopping. The pictures will help you choose the best style for your home.

Where to Shop for Door Hardware:

Big Box Stores: The big box stores provide a general assortment of door hardware.

Local Showrooms that Specialize in Door Hardware: Local showrooms often have a larger selection of door hardware, and I have found the service and knowledge of the salesmen and saleswomen to be much higher at local showrooms than at the big box stores.

What to Consider When Shopping:

Beauty
  • Choose door hardware that is similar in style to the architecture and other items in your house.
  • Pick a finish that matches or blends well with the other metal finishes in the room.

Durability
  • Ask about the quality of the door hardware's Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD).
  • Ask about the expected life of the door hardware.
  • Ask about the reputation of the door hardware brand.
