Door Locks Checklist

By Meghan Carter

Types of Exterior Door Locks:

  • Mortise Locks: Locks that have both the latch and deadbolt fitted into a box that is slid into a pocket cut into the edge of a door.
  • Tubular Locks: Locks that have a separate part for the latch and the dead bolt.

How to Tell which Type of Lock You Have:

  • Mortise Locks: If your door has one faceplate on the edge of the door for both your latch and your dead bolt, you have a mortise lock.
  • Tubular Locks: If you have separate faceplates on the edge of your door for your latch and your dead bolt, you probably have a tubular lock.
