Garage Door Styles Checklist

By Meghan Carter

Replacing your old garage door with a new one can increase your resell value by 1 to 4 percent, according to a 2006 study conducted by Stratamark Research and garage door manufacturer Clopay Building Products. But in order to see the increase in value, you must select a garage door style that complements your home.
Here are 6 easy steps to help you wade through the numerous garage door styles and find the ideal garage door for your home.

  • Before shopping, go outside and stand far away from your garage door.
  • Look at the color and architectural features on your home.
  • Find the colors and architectural details you would like repeated. For example, say you really like the arched windows on your home. Then selecting a garage door with arched windows would be a good idea. Maybe you like the strong horizontal lines on your home. Then selecting a garage door with horizontal lines would complement the ones on your home.
  • After deciding on the style of garage door that's right for your home, it's time to think about color. If you want a stained garage door to match your stained front door, you will need to get a wood garage door. Just remember wood doors must be maintained. If you want a garage door you can paint to match your home, wood or steel garage doors are your best bet.
  • If you decide to paint your garage door, don't limit yourself to one color. Garage doors look beautiful when painted two colors: one color for the main part of the door and an accent color for the trim on the door.
  • Once you've selected the garage door style and color you want, it's time for the accessories. Garage doors often look there best when they have a few extras added. Consider having decorative windows, door handle, door knockers and strap hinges added to your garage door.
