Glazing Steps

  • Check the labels on the paint and urethane to see how long each one will take to dry. Add the total amount of time up and find days in your schedule that you can devote to glazing your kitchen cabinets.
  • Remove all items from your kitchen cabinets to avoid getting paint on them.
  • Remove cabinet doors and cabinet drawers from the cabinet bases, and remove all door hardware.
  • Place door hardware in a bag to keep from losing any parts.
  • Clean the cabinet doors and cabinet bases with a mild soap and lukewarm water if you have not just painted the cabinets.
  • Thoroughly dry the cabinet doors and cabinet bases.
  • Put painters tape on any places you do not want to glaze. For example, walls next to cabinets or the inside of the cabinet bases.
  • Pour paint and glaze into your mixing bowl.
    • Dark Glaze: 3 parts paint to 1 part glaze
    • Medium Glaze: 1 part paint to 1 part glaze
    • Light Glaze: 1 part paint to 3 parts glaze
  • Mix the paint and glaze together until it appears to be a uniform color.
  • Start with the back of your cabinet doors. Dip your rag into the glaze mixture and rub it on the back of the cabinet doors in a straight or circular motion. Work in a small area.

  • Wipe the glaze off with a clean cloth.
  • Let the cabinet doors dry.
  • Glaze the cabinet drawers. Remember to work in a small area and wipe the glaze off with a clean cloth.
  • Glaze the cabinet bases.
  • Remove painters tape.
  • Allow your cabinet doors, drawers and bases to fully dry.
  • Once your cabinet doors are fully dry, glaze the front of the doors.
  • Allow the front of the cabinet doors to fully dry.
  • Urethane the cabinets if you want to keep your newly glazed kitchen cabinets as scratch free as possible. Read the urethane label to see how long you must wait before applying the urethane to your glazed kitchen cabinets.
  • Urethane the back of the cabinet doors.
  • Urethane the cabinet drawers.
  • Urethane the cabinet bases.
  • Allow the cabinet doors, drawers and bases to fully dry.
  • Urethane the front of the cabinet doors.
  • Read the instructions on the urethane can to see how long it takes for the urethane coat to fully cure. Allow your cabinets to dry for that amount of time.
  • Put the cabinet hardware back on the cabinets.
  • Rehang the cabinet doors.
  • Put the cabinet drawers back in the base cabinets.
  • Enjoy your beautifully glazed kitchen cabinets.
