How to Select the Best Marble Countertop

  • Evaluate your lifestyle. Do you want to spend a large amount of time caring for your marble countertops, or do you want low-maintenance marble countertops?
  • If you want low-maintenance marble countertops, consider choosing a Serpentine class marble because they are much more durable and less likely to chip or stain. Typically, the darker the marble, the less likely it will chip or stain.
  • Find a reputable stone distributor that offers a wide variety of marble and extra information about the durability of each type of marble the company offers.
  • Before purchasing marble countertops, ask to see the marble slabs. The sample of the marble you choose may look completely different than the slab they give you. You should see the marble slab before signing any papers to make sure it has the coloring and veining you like.
  • Discuss how to protect your marble with your installer or distributor. Two popular methods are sealing and impregnating. Before deciding which method to use, ask what type of finishes can be used with each method and if the method will change the color of the marble.
  • Never place citrus, especially lime, juice or rhubarb juice on your marble countertops. They can etch or stain the marble.
