Picking a Healthy Orchid Plant

The orchid is healthy if:

  • The orchid leaves are stiff.  
  • The orchid leaves do not have bumps or ridges when you touch them.
  • The orchid roots are a whitish color and feel stiff.
  • The orchid has numerous buds or blooms.

It is okay to buy an orchid if:

  • One of the orchid leaves looks yellow and feels limp, but the rest of the leaves are stiff and smooth. It is natural for the leaves to die off, and when that happens the leaves turn yellow and limp.
  • The orchid blooms or leaves have very slight imperfections.

Do not buy an orchid if:

  • The orchid leaves droop and feel limp.
  • The orchid leaves have bumps or ridges when you touch them.
  • The orchid leaves look discolored.
  • The orchid leaves look chewed.
  • The orchid roots are dark and squishy.
  • The orchid roots have a white, cotton-looking web on them.
  • The orchid blooms are wilting.
