If you love being outside but hate hot weather, an outdoor ceiling fan is a must for you. With just the flip of a switch, the hottest, stickiest days can be turned into relaxing hours spent lazing - or entertaining - outside.
But before running out to buy an outdoor ceiling fan, you need to know the basics of a good outdoor ceiling fan. To do that, I visited The Trading Post Ceiling Fan Company to meet with Donna Bigman, the marketing services manager for Casablanca Ceiling Fan Company.

Damp or Wet Rated Outdoor Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans are generally offered in two main categories: damp or wet rated.

Damp rated outdoor ceiling fans can be exposed to minimal water. They should be used in covered areas where the will never come in direct contact with water. Places where there is high humidity, such as covered porches or bathrooms, are perfect for damp rated ceiling fans.

Wet rated outdoor ceiling fans can be exposed to the elements and be perfectly fine. They can be exposed directly to water without being damaged. When it comes to cleaning, wet rated ceiling fans are ideal because you can simply hose them off, according to Bigman.

Outdoor Ceiling Fan Sizes

While you may be tempted to get the largest outdoor ceiling fan on the block, that's not the best idea. Your outdoor ceiling fan should be proportional to your outdoor space. If you have a small sized space, use a small outdoor ceiling fan. If you have a large sized space, use a large outdoor ceiling fan.

Outdoor Ceiling Fan Styles

While choosing a style and color for your indoor ceiling fan may seem easy because you can use your furniture and room fabrics as inspiration, choosing a style for your outdoor ceiling fan be confusing. After all, what's your inspiration supposed to be? Grass?
Actually, no. The outside of your home should be your inspiration. Look at the colors on your home, the type of hardware and the shape of the windows, doors and other features. Try to select an outdoor ceiling fan that has similar characteristics to the exterior of your home.
