What You Need to Paint Ceramic Tile

  • Oil Based Primer
  • Oil Based Paint
  • Clean Paintbrush
  • A Bucket
  • A Sponge
  • Mild Soap
  • Paint Can Opener or Flathead Screwdriver
  • Urethane
  • Painters Tape

Steps for How to Paint Ceramic Tile

  • Make sure the ceramic tile you plan to paint is not near water.
  • Check the labels on oil based primer, oil based paint and urethane to see how long each one will take to dry. Add the total amount of time up and find days in your schedule that you can devote that much time to painting ceramic tile.
  • Clean tile thoroughly. No mildew or mold can be present on the ceramic tile or grout when you paint it.
  • Dry the ceramic tile.
  • Put painters tape on the areas next to the ceramic tile you do not wish to paint.
  • Open the oil based primer and dip the brush in the primer.
  • Wipe the excess primer off on the inside of the can or on the paint tray.
  • Apply the primer to the ceramic tile using straight, even strokes that all go in the same direction.

  • Check to make sure extra primer has not collected in the grout lines.
  • Allow the primer to dry for the amount of time suggested on the primer label.
  • Open the oil based paint and dip a clean paintbrush in the paint.
  • Wipe the excess paint off on the inside of the paint can or the paint tray.
  • Apply the paint to the ceramic tile using straight, even strokes that all go in the same direction.
  • Check to make sure extra paint has not collected in the grout lines.
  • Allow the paint to dry for the amount of time suggested on the primer label.
  • Apply a second coat of paint if needed.
  • Let the second coat of paint dry for the recommended time on the paint label.
  • Read the instructions on the urethane and see how long you must wait before applying the urethane over the paint.
  • Wait that amount of time.
  • Open the can of urethane and dip a clean paintbrush into the can.
  • Apply the urethane to the ceramic tile using straight, even strokes that all go in the same direction.
  • Allow the urethane to fully cure for the amount of time listed on the urethane can.
  • Use the painted ceramic tile as you normally would, being careful not to let water sit on the tile. Also, avoid using harsh cleaners and don't scrub the tile.
