Easy ways to incorporate Shaker style into your home:
  • Shaker Pegs. Install Shaker pegs around a room or all of the rooms in your home.
  • Oval Boxes. Stack oval boxes on tables or shelves.
  • Shaker Styled Chairs. Use Shaker ladder-back chairs as kitchen table chairs, dining room table chairs, desk chairs or extra seating in hallways and living rooms.   

Main Characteristics of Shaker style:
  • Simplicity. Shaker homes and décor has a simplistic beauty that stems from their religious beliefs.
  • Function. Everything in a Shaker home is there for a purpose and serves a specific function. An object was considered beautiful because it functioned well.
  • Union. Shaker homes were communal homes that fostered a sense of togetherness.
  • Order. Shaker style is very neat and orderly. Everything had a specific place.

Shaker furniture and homes:
  • There is no distinct Shaker style of architecture or furniture because the Shaker built their homes and furniture to function well as possible. As a result Shaker architecture and furniture varies from region to region depending on the climate.
  • Shaker furniture is believed by some to be the predecessor to the Danish, modern style.
  • Shaker furniture and architecture is simplistic and lacking in elaborate details.
