Stairs Checklist

By Meghan Carter

The three questions you should ask your stair builder and the answers you want to hear.

Question 1: When will you Install my Stairs?

  • The stairs should be installed after the home has been drywalled, taped and primed.

Question 2: How do you Plan to Install the Stairs?

  • The stairs should be constructed using the mortise and tenon method, which is the strongest. The overly method is a much weaker stair building method.
  • The stairs should have cove molding that extends along the entire staircase.
  • The stairs should have glue blocks underneath each stair for support and to keep the stairs from squeaking.

Question 3: Do you create shop drawings and do I get a copy?

  • You should get a copy of the stair builder's shop drawings, which include the elevation and the spindles, newel post and hand railing you chose.
