Stencil Steps
- Make sure the place you plan to stencil is clean and dust free.
- Determine where you want your stencil. If you want the stencil to be perfectly straight, use a level. If the stencil is to wrap around the top of your wall, don't use a level because your ceiling might not be perfectly straight. Instead align the stencil with your ceiling.
- Use painters tape to tape your stencil to the wall. Make sure the stencil is perfectly flat.
- Put a small amount of paint on a dabbing plate.
- Dip your paintbrush or sponge in the paint.
- Dab off all excess paint until there is barely any paint left on the brush or sponge.
- Dab the paintbrush of sponge lighting over the stencil.
- Continue to dab in the same area, building layer upon layer of paint, until you have reached the desired amount. Be careful not too dab too hard because paint may seep under the stencil.
- Slowly remove your stencil.
- Wash your stencil if you plan to use it again.
- Let the paint dry completely before you apply another color over top or use a stencil next to the area.
