  • Use suspended ceilings in basements. That way you will have easy access to your homes main systems in case something malfunctions, such as a pipe leaking.
  • When selecting the ceiling tiles to put in your suspended ceiling, choose ones that will easily disguise the grid. Square patterns on ceiling tiles are always a good bet because they make the grid look as if it's part of the pattern.
  • Always make sure the suspended ceiling tiles you purchase can be used in basements. Because basements can be moister than other places in our homes, it's a good idea to purchase ceiling tiles that have protection against the moisture.
  • If your suspended ceiling grid is for 2 foot by 4 foot tiles, consider purchasing cross Ts to make your grid work for 2 foot by 2 foot tiles. The smaller tiles give a nicer look, according to Armstrong's Marketing Manager, Rich Wiley.
  • If you do decide to install a suspended ceiling, make sure you purchase a suspended ceiling system from a manufacturer with very good instructions.
  • If you plan on painting your suspended ceiling, purchase some extra tiles so you have a few testers. Paint different colors or faux finishes on the tiles. Then pop them into the grid to see which ones you like best.
