Wine Cellars Checklist

By Meghan Carter

To ensure that you are working with a quality wine cellar installer and manufacturer, here are some questions you should ask.

Questions to Ask Your Wine Cellar Installer and Manufacturer

  • What type of door should I use on my wine cellar?
    • Answer: An exterior grade door to prevent temperature and humidity leakage.
  • What type of lights should I use in my wine cellar?
    • Answer: There should be no lights containing UV rays. Some believe UV rays can damage wine in long-term storage. Any type of lighting that is chosen should be insulated so that there is minimal heat coming from the lights.
  • Can I have a carpet or vinyl floor in my wine cellar?
    • Answer: No. Vinyl will start to bunch up from the high humidity present in the wine cellar. Carpet will interfere with the installation of the wine racks and if you stain the carpet, you can't take it out because it is underneath the wine racks. Hardwood floor, porcelain tile and cork are good flooring options in a wine cellar.
  • Can I put a dining room table in my wine cellar?
    • Answer: It's not a good idea. Wine cellars stay at a temperature between 55 and 58 degrees Fahrenheit, which an uncomfortable temperature to eat in. A good option is to have a window looking into your wine cellar from a dining room or to build a glass room inside of the wine cellar that has separate temperature controls from the wine cellar.
